My father served in the 83rd Army of the United States in the 32 nd Ordinance Truck Maintenance Company. This is a photo of the ship he returned to the States on. I often wondered what the missing pieces looked like. I think this picture may have been in my dad's sister's possession because when I was a baby our house burned down and mom said she lost all of the pictures.
In December 1945 between the 12 th and 21st on that return trip, Dad said the ship listed on its side for some time and the troops were moved to the upper deck higher side.
On Google I found this complete picture and information on the history of the ship. I always thought a smokestack was missing- now I know why.
